We had delicious potatoes, carrots, salad, and bread to top off the chicken. As you can probably guess, we had ice cream, followed by a strawberry shortcake and a meringue cake as well. After seeing each other during the lows, seeing each other during the highs was such a great feeling. Getting involved on campus, making new friends, and succeeding in classes are only a few of the many ways you have watched each other grow.
The thing about Davis, though, is although it's a big school, it’s in a small town with many unique communities and organizations from all walks of life. If you have an interest there is likely a club for it, with more than 800 on campus, 39 club sports, and 29 intramural teams. Once my hometown friends and I knew our school schedules, we used a scheduling app to keep track of when we had class. That way whenever someone wanted to catch up, they'd know when to call. I was very nervous leaving for college, knowing I could lose touch with my friends and family. Always evaluate your insurance needs when a child leaves for college to ensure they remain protected.

You might have friends who are also staying local, meaning that your social circle can remain intact. You may even continue to participate in the same activities, like a club soccer team, church, or volunteer group. One major consideration for many students is how far away from home they are willing to go for college. Some students know right away that staying close to home is not a top priority, while others recognize that they will have difficulty relocating any significant distance. And some students know that going far away will be initially difficult, but they will be be able to adjust over time, if the school is the right fit.

If you plan to live on campus, one of the first experiences you're likely to have will be meeting your new roommates. I happened to meet one of mine at orientation, and we kept in touch from then on until move-in day. We grabbed meals together, relaxed in our common rooms, and were always there for one another through both our highs and our lows.

They’re about an hour from their family and friends and everything they grew up with. That’s not the case for me though, as I live a town over, and it takes a total of 10 minutes to drive from my house to my dorm. When I tell people that, they usually ask me if I go home a lot since it’s so close. I go home for holidays of course, but otherwise, I’ve maybe gone home about 3 times between the months of September and February. When you live a while away, it's not easy for your parents to pack up and come visit for homecoming or family weekend. Additionally, the struggle goes both ways because it's not going to be easy for you to get home for family events that you could've attended before.
If you are experiencing homesickness in college, it’s a normal sign that you are understandably missing the familiar and comfortable environment of home, family, and friends. Even if you're a senior, you long for the days of lying on the couch at home and having Mom cook you your favorite meal, or really just having no school work to stress about . If you live a far distance from home, you can't just decide to make a quick trip home to visit them.
Note, however, that many states impose restrictions on the voting rights of convicted felons in certain cases -- a controversial issue that the ACLU has called attention to. Moving away from home for the first time will require plenty of logistics and decisions to be made. Mapping out a solid exit plan will make your journey away from the nest much easier.
You don’t have to become your mom – planning out an entire weekend of cleaning. But setting time aside during the week and throughout the month to maintain a proper living space can go a long way. You will feel much better about your living situation when it’s kept neat. To follow up on the previous tip – if there are a few things you don’t have the budget to purchase don’t be afraid to ask your parents, friends, or extended family.
There had to be at least 6 different cakes for us, which we ate alongside our professors and the Spanish students. How we forgot about the laid-back South American culture, I don’t know, but we were there before anyone else. Our professor arrived at 2 pm, and slowly we started cooking the meat and eating around 3 pm. A student brought his keyboard and serenaded us, and we chatted with the students, in both English and Spanish, while eating more slabs of meat than one can imagine. An asado is exactly that, along with vegetables, pasta salads, and bread. Looking back on freshman year together is one of my favorite times.
